Chapter Eighteen

STEVEN, LOST IN THE absolute darkness of nowhere, still had his cores of energy inside him. It was risky, but he wasn’t about to wait around in the abyss to be rescued. He cast a Magica Divinatio spell.

He thought to reach out to connect to Quinnestri’s mind. Instead, he found himself in a vision. He floated above the Rio Grande Sea, the red storm was gone, and the sky was thick with Shaze, so many they blocked out the stars. Their whistles seemed dim compared to a thunder growing below. He felt the sound before he heard it—the muttering growl was coming from the bowels of an island in the ocean—that had to be Alamosa, though it looked so odd. The sound grew until it thumped through the air and splashed through the sea. An eerie silence followed, and then, the blinding radiance of ChromaticFury. The energy erupted out of the island, mushrooming out before striking the demons.

Ash from the obliterated Shaze was caught in the winds. And that radiance didn’t just come from the master chamber of Alamosa. All across the North American continent, from every Americos cavern, that same light reached up to disintegrate everything filled with Morta around them. That was the key—focusing the chambers on destroying Morta. The Dragonknights had aimed that energy at Steven during his exile.

The other key? ChromaticFury. That was what they needed to power the master chamber. Yet, how would he protect Heridan and Nefri from the blast? What would happen to Steven’s own Morta core when they activated the chambers? Maybe it was good that Vandrus Dree had refused to help him. The whole dark elf army would be destroyed once they used the Americos chambers.

The ash continued to sprinkle down, but the floating particles never reached the ground. The ash landed on strands of silvery threads covering the entire San Luis Valley. It was like a spider web between the two mountain ranges. No, those filaments stretched across all possible realities. At the web’s center? Something dark and swollen pulsated, a thing with long legs that stretched for miles. And a mouth, total darkness, total void, inside the drooling orifice.

Steven felt his soul shrink from that thing, that spidery thing at the center of the infinite web. He couldn’t quite see it; his eyes didn’t want to register that something like that could exist. To look at it too long would drive him insane.

There you are! Quinn’s voice grabbed his mind.

Seconds later, Steven was back in his body, on the cold sand, with Zoey’s bear fur warming him and, of course, Quinn still on him. Traveling across the universe hadn’t helped him stay hard. And he had other things to worry about.

Steven couldn’t believe they’d failed to get Vandrus Dree to help them. And how was he going to learn ChromaticFury in the next few hours? Aria and Mouse were the best at Exhalants, but they hadn’t been able to master the skill yet. As for his army back
